CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Pete Simpson Jr., who spent 29 years as Blue Man No. 9 and performed in over 5,000 silent shows, ended his role when New York's run finished in February and now starts new experimental theater work including an adaptation of a 750-page math book (set to begin in October) while staying true to his Wyoming roots. - ➤ Columnist Bill Sniffin wrote that 'Home on the Range' shows Wyoming spirit and could have been our official state song. He traced the song’s history in towns like Jeffrey City and recounted actor Wilford Brimley’s recitation—suggesting a mining comeback may revive its legacy. Cowboy State Daily
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne plans to change its name after a two-year study found the current name confuses students from outside Wyoming— the Board of Trustees approved the intent and the college will soon ask students, staff, and alumni for ideas. Cap City News
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Meteorologist Don Day explained that Wyoming’s wind is amplified when a high-pressure system in Utah and a low-pressure system in Nebraska meet—air speeds up through mountains and gaps—making gusts stronger, especially in winter and spring. Cowboy State Daily
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Cheyenne YMCA will close indefinitely this week due to low membership and funding issues (a concern for local users), which has officials considering a new year-round rec center. City Council member Scott Royal and columnist Barron expect voters to soon weigh a proposal competing with plans for a new south pool (adding a competitive edge) as the debate over community facilities intensifies. - ➤ Laramie County commissioners denied the site plan for the Laramie Range Wind Project after residents raised concerns over water, traffic, wildlife and property values—this $1.1 billion proposal, which could have brought 170 turbines northwest of Cheyenne and created over 300 construction jobs, was voted down 3–1 after a lengthy public hearing. - ➤ Mayor Collins and the City Council discussed many issues today, including annexing 17 acres for a new Winco Grocery, revising vehicle noise rules, and approving a $662,000 bid for new lights at the Dutcher Baseball Complex plus plans for projects like remodeling the Municipal Building and upgrading police digital software. The Council will also consider funding options using the 6th Penny Tax and proposals for the old airport terminal conversion as part of their review of future projects. KFBC
